The Island of New Guinea was first discovered in 1512 by the Portuguese explorer Antonio d’Abreu. It is the second largest island in the world, which is currently divided into two parts. Its name goes back to the Spanish explorer Alvaro Saavedra, who derived it from the similarity of complexion between locals and the inhabitants of Guinea in Africa. It is an Arabic word meaning “dark-skinned man”. Part of the island was colonised by the Germans in 1885. Later on, it became an Australian protectorate. Since 1975, Papua New Guinea has been an independent state within the Commonwealth.
