Setting his eyes on Tristan (Shane Brolly), a young and talented, but quirky poker player, rekindles Francis Fischer's (Val Kilmer) passion for poker. Tristan has valuable attributes in Francis' eyes - anonymity and the magician's skills. Francis is well-known and, consequently, incapable of success as a surfer in the sandy world of poker, but in Tristan, he sees a meal ticket, and so Francis takes him under his wing.
Unfortunately, Tristan needs some schooling, not in playing poker, but in the art of baiting, cheating, and deceiving potential opponents and side bettors to trap them. Tristan has a hard time adapting to Francis' methods, clearly troubled by the inherent immorality. But finally he is ready and Francis gives him money to play, and Tristan, at long last transforming himself into the hustler Francis had always wanted him to be, makes a lot of money.
Everything is great until the day Tristan gets beat up and robbed in his apartment. Broke, he has to start over and is at Francis' mercy. But Tristan has had enough and tells him that this next big private game will be his last and he's dumping him, a clear blow to the man's pride.
From Francis' vantage point, dumping and deception is not acceptable after the involvement he did put in Tristan and he won't let him go. He is now preparing for the only match out there that matters to him...the one against Tristan himself...and playing and winning that match is his new raison d’être.
Unfortunately for both of them, the police have been watching them for a while as poker itself has its black wolf; its name is the Chameleon, a man who hasn't paid millions in taxes from monies won at Poker.
Is Tristan smarter or will Francis succeed to take down his protégé? This becomes a real life poker game where winning is not enough!
